What’s On Your Christmas List?

Have you heard all the buzz this week about Gwyneth Paltrow’s Christmas wish list on her Goop blog?  You might have….or maybe not.  I actually noticed the story because I read news outlets online and the NY Daily News online has a story about it.  I was passively curious about what a celebrity would have on their holiday wish list, aside from Oprah Winfrey, of course.  The article in the NY Daily News calls it outright “her silly Christmas wish list.”

I admit that I was kind of amused as well at some of these laughable “gift ideas”.  A set of four monogrammed napkins for $175 or a pair of silk jammies for $53o.  Oh, I almost forgot the $175 paperweight.  Who really needs all this stuff, in the real world?  On the other hand, this is Gwyneth Paltrow and she is super rich so maybe her audience isn’t the real world.  It has to be the super elite world.

But what about the rest of us?  Ah, we can relax because and breathe a sigh of relief because there is hope out there!  I like to give unique gifts whenever I can and I also like to give people gifts I know they want.

Here is my sample top 5:

1.  Etsy.  Have you ever tried to shop for your mother-in-law, for someone whom you have no clue what it is they like, or for someone who is hard to shop for?  Well Etsy is your answer!  Etsy is a marketplace where people buy and sell unique, handmade goods.  I’ve always been a big supporter of giving something you make, rather than something you go to a store to buy, if possible.  Here is a sample:

Personalized Signature Necklace or Bracelet - Sterling Silver Name Necklace - Your Handwriting Jewelry

For her: A personalized signature necklace or bracelet

Ready to Ship - Mens Beard Hat

For him: A mens beard hat

These gift ideas are just two of the hundreds of unique gifts you can give as a regular gift or a stocking stuffer.  Just browse the site and you might be surprised at what you find from these Amazing crafters and artists!

2.  Walmart.  Yes, I have to mention Walmart because believe it or not, most toys for young children (toddlers to grade school) are best found here.  From dolls and Legos to cars and action heroes.  $12 anyone?  You bet!

3.  Amazon.  This site offers more than just books.  You can also find a unique gift for your dad or father-in-law, for example.  Check out this chess set that you don’t have to worry will break if knocked over!

Here is a chess set for $27.59 as of this post.

4.  Kohl’s.  What girl doesn’t like clothes and accessories?  The thing I like about Kohl’s is that it is so affordable AND, if you are anything like me, I love to use discounts and reward points.  I always do at this site and in-store.  If you combine reward points with their percent discounts and buy whatever you like that is on sale, you’ll be amazed at what you can save.  I bought one of my favorite Simply Vera cardigans for $10, no lie!

5.  Your Local Bakery.  Huh?  Yes, your local bakery has the best indulgent pastries that you can give as a gift if you are not a baker or if you don’t really have a lot of time to bake.  You don’t have to spend a lot of money on baked goods either.  You can get a dozen decadent or holiday cookies for under $5 and believe me, it is a gift that is very much appreciated.  You can also splurge on cakes, pastries, and other goodies at your bakery shop.  A bakery is usually much more inexpensive than you grocery store.  Compare several bake shops in case you don’t have a favorite one because aside from the cost, they must also taste good!

So, when you are prepping your wish list or gift guide, if you are like the 99% of us who live in the real world, I think these suggestions are much more attainable, coveted, practical, and much more enjoyable.

Do you have any suggestions?
