Meet the Teacher! (Part 3 of Back-to-School)

When I was young (ahem, a very long time ago), there was no such thing as “Meet the Teacher” night.  We were basically just left at the door on the first day and that’s about it.  Today a genius innovator decided to invent a night to go to your child’s school to meet their teacher before the first day of school and frankly, I am so grateful!  I wish this had been invented when I was younger.  I don’t think I would have been so scared and I think that perhaps I would have appreciated school a lot more.

Get to know her/him.  It’s a great idea to go to this particular event because you get to meet the person who will be responsible for your child’s first steps into education.  It’s also a chance for you to see your child’s environment and how he/she will acclimate to their surroundings.  It’s also an opportunity to take pictures!

Ask the teacher a lot of questions!  From what they will teach, to what kind of communication you will have with them, or what kind of projects you can get or be involved in.  Lunch, their daily schedule, grades, etc.

Tell the teacher and school about appointments.  It’s important to let the teacher and the school know when your baby will have a doctor’s appointment so that they and your child can adjust accordingly.  Some schools suggest that you try to schedule appointments after a certain time of day so that they will not be counted absent and not affect their attendance record.

There are other things you can ask the teacher but most importantly know that you can communicate with him/her and know how you can be involved in your child’s education.  Your baby will appreciate that you are there for them.
