Yes, Not YEAH!

I studied English Literature in college.  My favorite class in grade school was English grammar.  I love to read and I love to write.  So it is only natural that I am a stickler for people to have some kind of grasp on good grammar and correct spelling.

I had somewhat touched on this subject before in my October 21, 2011 Spell Check! post.  I touched on how it is a good recommendation to submit work that has been properly combed for spelling errors.  I would like to go a litter further with this.

I have noticed in the last few weeks on news channels or news programs how anchors tend to use language that should perhaps be contained to a more familiar setting.  I’ve always thought that professional should be professional and relaxed should be relaxed.  There’s a time and a place for everything.  On Good Morning America, for example, the host Lara Spencer, says “you guys”s a lot to her co-anchors and to her guests.  On our local news station there is a lot of “you people” going on.  Gee, doesn’t that sound crass?  Another thing I’ve noticed a lot of is how people use the word “like” or “you know” for everything.  “I was like, going to the kitchen you know, to get a salad and so and so took it.”  I once watched an interview with Jennifer Lopez on the E! network and I couldn’t help myself and began to count how many times she used “you know” when she spoke.  She is known to use that term a lot.  Over 40 times in a period of an hour.  It sounds awful!  Did they just pick up bad habits or do they just not know any better?

I mainly bring this up because my son will be in school soon and I’ve noticed that he has been picking up words or phrases that are incorrect when he had been fine before.  He substitutes ‘me’ for ‘I’, for example.  “Mommy, me am thirsty” or “Me want a toy.”  He also uses ‘catched’ instead of ‘caught’ or ‘felled’ instead of ‘fell’.  Of course, he is only 4 but I just wonder if it is something he is picking up from somewhere or if he is doing it on purpose.  He was speaking fine before which is why it caught my attention.

What does one have to do with the other?  Well, bad habits start somewhere.  I am trying to gently correct my son, read with him constantly, and talk to him incessantly about anything.

If you guys ever get a chance to watch Ms. JLo, you know, just listen to how she sounds.  LOL!!!!
